Our mission is to provide one daily meal to people aged 65 and older in Haiti who are living in extreme poverty, alone, homebound, with mental and physical disabilities.
Researches show that hunger in seniors is a growing crisis around the world and it’s expecting to be worst in the coming years. In industrialized countries like the USA and Canada, despite the existence of many social and community programs aimed at reducing or ending hunger in seniors, this population is being hit very hard by the economic burden and the pandemic. We presumed that the situation could be far more critical in Haiti where such programs are nonexistent. In Haiti, even though the elderly people are vulnerable, they are forgotten, defenseless, and have no voice whatsoever. From April to June 2020, our volunteers lead a field study in four areas in Plateau Central (Center of Haiti) where our families come from. The reality over there is heartbroken:
For all these reasons and more, we believe that hunger in seniors in Haiti is too serious to be ignored. Being poor is not a reason to die from hunger. Our work intends to alleviate their living conditions and make a difference in their lives. While we are working on developing strong advocacy strategies so that their voice could be heard, we believe that urgent actions are needed, and now.
OUR WORK
Considering the living cost, the burden of the pandemic, and our financial limitation, on September 11th, 2020, we launched our pilot project with only 13 of the neediest people recruited by our staff in Hinche. They will be served 2 meals a week (Mondays and Fridays) until January 2021. During this period, however, with more funding, we are capable of feeding up to 25 people, since more than one hundred are already qualified for the program.
For now, our volunteers deliver to food to each senior at their house for those who are homebound and at their sitting place for those who are begging on the streets.
Starting in January 2021, our goal is to provide a daily meal to over one hundred seniors in Hinche and nearby areas.
Building community cafeterias in the communities where FOSH is present, to serve all qualified seniors.
